European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.

  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept dozens of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.
