The seasonal content update for the block-building phenomenon has arrived — and it features the initial fresh armament added to the game since the heavy club made its debut. The javelin is finally here and it could very well alter your gameplay in Minecraft, especially if you thrive on pandemonium.
The Mounts of Mayhem update also incorporates a host of fresh elements and updates related to riding animals in the game. That driving concept made the spear the natural choice for this release, as the creators had long felt it was time for a new weapon.
"From the outset, we understood that we wanted a new weapon that would add some more range, and we envisioned it for mounted combat," stated a lead developer. "We experimented with a few different ideas, but the spear was the one that both handled superbly when we ran our trials and also was visually fitting for the use case."
If you're asking yourself whether mounted combat means you can joust against your allies on steeds, the answer is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an combat move excellently designed for it.
"Mounted lance combat] is one of the biggest functions for the spear, and it's a blast," the lead adds. "The spear has a dual attack system: You have the quick stab, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a sprinting strike where you couch your lance and get greater injury [with] the more pace you have. So [it’s] ideal for jousting on horses."
The chaotic fun doesn't have to stop there, though. If you're deep enough into the game that you've explored The End, the developers have an truly outlandish idea. "If you are quite advanced, [spears are] ideal for equipping the elytra and taking to the skies and unleashing absolute pandemonium," she teases.
In other words: Aerial lance combat is now real, and it should be made an Olympic sport without delay.
Another significant inclusion in this new update is the Nautilus. This aquatic being, which is based on the nautilus shells we've all been collecting for years, can be domesticated and mounted for submarine exploration. Not only will it carry you through the water more swiftly than swimming, it'll also maintain your air supply, so there's no need to surface for oxygen.
The rest of the additions are primarily things that want to kill you, as is the nature of Minecraft. Naturally, there's also a zombie Nautilus popping up in the water, often with a zombie villager on its back. If you succeed in dispatch the Drowned, though, you can claim the undead mount — or the regular one, for that matter — with a puffer fish.
"We've long considered this problem periodically, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it felt like the perfect moment to also bring in something for aquatic environments," the developer clarifies. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a few different ideas for underwater mounts that we wanted to try out, but the Nautilus design sketches looked compelling, and we have the link to the Nautilus shell that was already in the game."
She also points out that there are actually two different types of zombie Nautilus: regular and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] provide diversity to what you discover underwater."
Further inclusions include the Parched, desert-exclusive undead archers that can endure the sun, which means there's no getting away from them if you end up in that environment. Sometimes you'll see them on camel husks, another fresh creature. Camel husks have an notable look that sees their bones protruding. The applies equally to zombie horses, who have a comparable rib-popping design and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a spear-carrying undead rider on their back.
The final pair of items on the drop's list are minor quality-of-life improvements, including some long-overdue tweaks to equestrian travel. Now, you can traverse bodies of water while atop a horse. Additionally, high-tier barding is now obtainable at the workbench, so you can provide your steed with the top-tier safeguarding it is worthy of.
In summary, the last content update of the year is a pretty good one. The spear by itself — and the mayhem it enables — would have constituted a major improvement. Combine that with the Nautilus, and additional creatures seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a touch more chaotic.
The Mayhem Mounts content drop is available for Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft.
