No Fewer Than 6 Perish in Stampede at Ghanaian Armed Forces Enlistment Drive
At least 6 people have lost their lives during a crowd crush at a armed forces enlistment gathering held in a sports arena in Ghana.
The Wednesday's "devastating" event appeared to have been triggered by "an unexpected surge of applicants who overcame security measures and rushed into the gates," announced a release from Ghana's armed forces.
22 additional individuals were injured, including five who are in serious state.
Thousands had turned up at the El-Wak sports venue, in the capital, Accra, with the hope of joining the armed forces.
Ghana has a youth unemployment rate of approximately thirty-two percent, the latest official data indicate, and such enlistment drives normally draw massive gatherings and often result in chaotic scenes.
The closing date to submit applications for this event was prolonged for a seven days to allow for more applicants, as some had faced difficulties in the process.
Military representative Capt Veronica Adzo Arhin said the crush took place before the event's scheduled start of 06:20 GMT.
The nation's leader John Mahama has visited the injured in medical care.
Calm has been reestablished, and the recruitment exercise has now begun.
