Oversized Jeans, Industrial-Inspired Attire and An Abundance of Toughness: Premium Redefined at the Brand

NYC style showcase is shaping up as a particularly perplexing time for design houses as they face a worldwide decline, causing some to wonder what premium style even means today.

For some consumers, it is inevitably about a gleaming five-figure handbag. For others, it is a limited-edition designer toy. While a certain cohort considers a plain cashmere jumper to be the peak of elegance, brand emblems persists for others. Retro buys is now used to signify quality but similarly buying nothing has become a meaningful symbol.

Artistic Director the Brand’s Stylist on High Fashion

Prior to the Coach show, the head designer commented that the word luxury was “overused”. Originally from England, who has collaborated with the New York label since 2013, noted that he was no longer “drawn to extreme polish or perfection that has long been tied to luxury”.

Rather, the runway lineup aimed to reflect what is seen as coveted in the eyes of Gen Z. This resulted in dropped jeans so relaxed they could be heard brushing against the stage with edges dirty and marked. Shrunken knits appeared to be aged. Some models wore industrial-looking boots with heavy bottoms and scratched leather.

There were also actual practical items, including repurposed trousers with color stains still visible. Meanwhile, motorcycle jackets appeared broken-in because they were – fashioned from upcycled leather, part of a wider sustainability initiative the brand started in 2023.

Welcome to luxury 2.0. This is what the new generation wants to wear and is already wearing all over the city’s trendy districts. The designer loves to people-watch and his time spent doing so is proving fruitful. In a world of competing trends, the brand has managed to engage gen Z.

Commercial Performance and Artistic Themes

On the most recent Lyst Index, a periodic study that orders brands based on sales, the house now sits at number five, placed between another luxury brand and The Row. In August, its holding group said the brand continued to top revenue at the group, rising 14% to a substantial sum since January.

Its achievements means its show has become one of the largest on the schedule. This time it took over a expansive event space overlooking the East River, filling it with attendees including stars and athletes.

Earlier lineups drew from American imagery, including statement tops, this time the stylistic nods were much more muted. The designer said he had been thinking about toughness: “By grit, I mean durability, and the beauty of how the city comes back to life every morning.”

The creative director credited “a unique point of view and a unique aesthetic” as part of its appeal. “Our pieces have a certain down-to-earth quality. There is a certain ease to them. I think that sits well with the times we are in.”

Pricing Approach and History

Its cost structure also works. Its popular handbag, seen carried by the arm of celebrities, is priced at an attainable mark – something shoppers can afford to save up for rather than just add to a dream collection. Statement clutches that reimagine a retro look and sit closer to a higher price point have also had a rise in demand thanks to celebrity endorsements in entertainment.

Coach is also leaning into its rich heritage. A-list celebrities have been pictured carrying classic bags from earlier decades. Meanwhile, after noticing young shoppers were buying vintage pieces featuring the signature monogram, the designer has put a fresh spin on the idea of emblematic style. This time around, it comes combined with plaid and check patterns on pleated skirts.

Closing Impressions

To conclude, the show presented a vision of luxury that is unfiltered, wearable, and deeply rooted in the urban environment. By adopting character, function, and green practices, Coach has successfully redefined what premium design can look like in a modern context.
