The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been removed from his position after failing a vote of confidence that came after his controversial social media posts about Charlie Kirk.
The vote against the student leader achieved the required super-majority to remove him from office, according to an statement from the society.
Contentious Posts
The dispute began after the student reportedly shared messages on social media that seemed to celebrate the death of the American conservative figure, who was fatally shot while addressing a college in the United States.
According to reports, one Instagram post reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the phrase 'lol'.
The president-elect is also said to have written in a messaging group with fellow students appearing to welcome the incident.
Election Results
The vote of confidence took place over the weekend, with outcomes announced on this week.
Official notices indicated that over twelve hundred votes were cast in favor of removal, while just over five hundred were against the motion.
The notice stated that the future president was deemed to have resigned in following the Oxford Union's rules.
Procedural Disputes
Voting operations were temporarily halted early on the previous day after the returning officer was reportedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from multiple individuals.
In a response, Mr Abaraonye claimed that the vote tally had been stopped because electoral officials believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of process errors".
His response unequivocally denied that any person appointed by George had participated in threatening or obstructive conduct.
Continuing Controversy
The president-elect maintained that significant concerns had been referred to the disciplinary committee and that he remained president-elect.
His comment added that he was "proud and thankful to have the support of significantly more than half of university members" who supported a "safe election and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".
Opponents have argued that any failure to remove him would "demonstrate internationally that the Oxford Union has prioritized politics over principles".
External Reactions
On Friday, Kirk's former chief of staff presented an open letter to the Oxford Union on a related program podcast.
The letter accused the union of becoming a institution where "presidents of the union publicly celebrate the assassination of a ideological rival".
The statement indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to remain in post, supporters would "directly reach out to every U.S. political figure who has ever spoken at the society and urge them never again to lend their name".
The society had previously criticized the student's remarks after Kirk's death and stated that concerns submitted about him had been referred for official review.
The student leader had been one of several students to debate with Kirk at the society in May.
